What is Hotjar?
Hotjar was a behavior analytics product for websites: one tracking script recorded clicks, scrolling and individual visits, and Hotjar presented them as heatmaps and session recordings next to surveys, feedback widgets, funnels and unmoderated user tests. Its free plan captured 35 sessions a day and 20 survey responses a month. Contentsquare bought Hotjar in 2021 and in 2024 built a single platform combining the Contentsquare, Heap and Hotjar products. By July 2026 hotjar.com described Hotjar as "now part of Contentsquare" and sent plan and pricing questions to contentsquare.com; in mid-August 2026 the site began redirecting entirely, and Contentsquare now says new users can sign up only on Contentsquare. Hotjar's heatmaps, recordings (called Session Replay in Contentsquare) and surveys continue inside Contentsquare's Free, Growth, Pro and Enterprise plans, and existing Hotjar users log in with their old credentials through Contentsquare.
Hotjar was a website behavior analytics tool known for heatmaps, session recordings, on-site surveys and feedback widgets, and it is no longer sold as a separate product. Contentsquare, which acquired Hotjar in 2021 and brought the Contentsquare, Heap and Hotjar products together in one platform in 2024, now states that "Hotjar is now Contentsquare" and that it is no longer possible to create a new account on Hotjar. Since mid-August 2026, hotjar.com redirects to a Contentsquare sign-up page and hotjar.com/pricing to Contentsquare's pricing page. Existing Hotjar customers sign in with their same credentials through Contentsquare's login. Former Hotjar users now land on Contentsquare's Free plan (200,000 sessions a month, one month of data) or its Growth plan, from $39/month billed yearly ($49 billed monthly) for 7,000 monthly sessions.
Standout feature: Historically, Hotjar paired heatmaps and session recordings with on-site surveys and feedback widgets behind one easy install, which Contentsquare describes as having made it the leading product experience insights platform for midsize and small businesses.
Biggest weakness: Hotjar can no longer be bought or signed up for: hotjar.com redirects to Contentsquare, new accounts are created only on Contentsquare, and the old Hotjar plans have been replaced by Contentsquare's Free, Growth, Pro and Enterprise tiers.
Hotjar: pros and cons
Pros
- Combined heatmaps, session recordings, surveys and feedback widgets behind one tracking script.
- Quick to install and easy for non-analysts to read, which made it popular with small and midsize sites.
- Offered a free plan (35 sessions a day, 20 survey responses a month) so small sites could start without paying.
- Held a 4.6/5 rating from 545 reviews on Capterra.
Cons
- No longer sold: new Hotjar accounts cannot be created, and sign-ups go to Contentsquare.
- hotjar.com and hotjar.com/pricing now redirect to Contentsquare, which sells only its own plans.
- Teams that wanted a simple standalone tool now have to adopt Contentsquare's broader platform and session-based plan structure.
