What is Smartlead?
Smartlead is a cold email outreach platform for agencies, founders and sales teams that send at volume. It connects any number of Gmail, Outlook or SMTP mailboxes, warms them up through its private warmup pool, rotates sending across them within each campaign, and runs multi-step sequences with spintax, personalization fields and subsequences triggered by a lead's reply intent. Replies from every mailbox and client land in a master inbox that auto-categorizes them and syncs to a Kanban-style CRM, HubSpot, Salesforce or Pipedrive. Beyond sending, Smartlead sells deliverability infrastructure (dedicated SmartServers with their own IPs, SmartSenders mailbox provisioning, SmartDelivery placement tests), a B2B lead finder called SmartProspect and SmartDialer for calls, plus SmartAssistant and other AI agents that create campaigns, triage replies and diagnose deliverability problems. Agencies can white-label the app and give each client a separate workspace. Developers get an API, webhooks and an MCP server for Claude and other assistants, though API and webhooks are not included on the $39 Base plan.
Smartlead is a cold email outreach platform built around sending infrastructure: every plan connects unlimited mailboxes with unlimited warmup and automatic sender rotation, and replies from all mailboxes land in one master inbox. Plans are priced by send volume rather than seats: Base costs $39/month for 6,000 emails and 2,000 contacts, Pro $94/month for 90,000 emails, Unlimited Smart $174/month for 150,000 emails with 50,000 verified prospect emails included, and Unlimited Prime $379/month for 500,000 emails; annual billing cuts 17%. Add-ons cover inbox placement tests (SmartDelivery, from $49/month), dedicated servers ($39/server/month), done-for-you mailboxes, white-label client workspaces ($29 each) and calling (SmartDialer). Smartlead, run by Sydney-based 521 Products Pty Ltd, says 100,000+ businesses use it and offers a 14-day free trial without a card.
Standout feature: Unlimited mailboxes and unlimited warmup on every plan, with sending priced by email volume rather than per seat or per inbox, plus a master inbox that pulls replies from every mailbox and client workspace into one queue.
Biggest weakness: The entry plan is stripped down and much of the real cost sits in add-ons: Base ($39/month) has no API, webhooks or CRM, verified prospect emails cost $59/month extra below Unlimited Smart, and placement testing, dedicated servers, mailboxes and white-label workspaces are billed separately. Smartlead has also replaced ticketed support with its SmartAssistant AI, which it says answers 80-90% of questions, with human call-backs for the rest.
Smartlead: pros and cons
Pros
- Unlimited mailboxes and unlimited warmup on all four plans, so adding inboxes does not raise the subscription.
- Automatic sender rotation spreads each campaign across connected mailboxes to protect individual sender reputation.
- Master inbox auto-categorizes replies from every mailbox and client and syncs them to HubSpot, Salesforce or Pipedrive.
- White-label client workspaces at $29/month each let agencies run Smartlead under their own brand.
- API, webhooks and an MCP server let teams drive campaigns from Clay, n8n, Make or Claude.
Cons
- The Base plan excludes the API, webhooks and CRM that agencies usually need.
- Add-ons stack up: SmartDelivery placement tests start at $49/month, dedicated SmartServers cost $39/server/month and verified leads cost $59/month on Base and Pro.
- Support is AI-first: ticketed human support was replaced by SmartAssistant, with staff stepping in by phone for unresolved issues.
- The iOS app rates 2.1/5 from 9 App Store ratings, so day-to-day work stays on the web app.
