What is Continue?
Continue is a model-agnostic AI coding assistant: it adds agent, chat, edit and autocomplete modes to VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, plus a terminal CLI (cn, published on npm as @continuedev/cli), and routes every request to the model provider the developer chooses, from the OpenAI or Anthropic APIs to models served locally through Ollama. Settings, rules, prompts and MCP servers live in a local config.yaml file rather than a vendor account. After Cursor acquired Continue Dev, Inc. in June 2026, the team cut a final 2.0 release that removed anonymous telemetry, hosted sign-in and Hub-based model references, so the extension now runs entirely on the user's own API keys or local models. The Apache 2.0 codebase (about 36,300 GitHub stars and 5,500 forks) stays free to install, use and fork, and the extension shows 4.4 million installs on the VS Code Marketplace, but the repository is read-only and the original team no longer fixes bugs or adds model support.

Standout feature: Model-agnostic by design: any provider or local model, configured in a version-controlled config.yaml with rules, prompts and MCP servers, and since the final 2.0 release no account, sign-in or telemetry at all.
Biggest weakness: Continue is no longer maintained: Cursor acquired Continue Dev, Inc. in June 2026, the hosted platform and every paid plan were shut down, and the GitHub repository has been read-only since the final v2.1.0 release, so new models, new IDE versions and security issues will not get fixes from the original team.
