What is WinDirStat?
WinDirStat (Windows Directory Statistics) is a disk usage viewer and cleanup assistant for Microsoft Windows. It reads the folder structure of one or more drives and presents it three ways at once: a sortable directory tree, a file-type list, and a treemap where each file is a rectangle whose area matches its size, so oversized folders, forgotten videos or bloated caches stand out immediately; selecting an item in the tree locates it in the treemap. Bernhard Seifert wrote the original in 2003 as a Windows counterpart to the KDE tool KDirStat, and Oliver Schneider and Bryan Berns now maintain it. The 2.x releases (2.9.3 shipped in October 2026) added accelerated NTFS scanning, duplicate finding, sunburst and flame-graph views, permission inspection, storage-cost estimates, command-line scans with CSV and JSON reports, and deleted-file recovery for NTFS, exFAT and FAT drives. WinDirStat is free for personal and commercial use under the GNU GPL v3 or later, with no paid edition, and runs on x64, x86 and ARM64 Windows or from a portable ZIP.
WinDirStat is a free, open-source (GPLv3) disk usage analyzer for Windows that scans drives, folders, network shares or phones and shows what fills them as a treemap in which every rectangle is a file, sized by space and colored by file type. Version 2.x adds largest-file and file-type views, sunburst and flame-graph charts, duplicate detection by content hash, search by name, size, type or owner, CSV and JSON export, saved scan snapshots and file-system change monitoring; run as administrator, it reads the NTFS Master File Table directly for faster scans. Cleanup actions range from Recycle Bin deletes and Windows Disk Cleanup to NTFS compression, hardlink deduplication and recovery of deleted files. WinDirStat supports Windows 7 through 11 and Windows Server 2008 R2 through 2025, installs via MSI, Microsoft Store, winget, Chocolatey or Scoop, and has 4,300+ GitHub stars.
Standout feature: A treemap of the whole drive in which every rectangle is a file sized by disk space and colored by type, linked to the directory tree and file-type list so a selection in one view is located in the others.
Biggest weakness: WinDirStat runs only on Windows, and its fast scan needs administrator rights on a local NTFS drive: network shares, phones and non-NTFS volumes fall back to slower folder-by-folder enumeration. It also has no one-click junk scan like CCleaner or BleachBit; it shows where the space went and leaves the decision about what to delete to you.
WinDirStat: pros and cons
Pros
- Free and open source under the GNU GPL v3 or later, for personal and commercial use.
- Treemap, sunburst and flame-graph views make large files and folders obvious at a glance.
- Accelerated scanning reads the NTFS Master File Table directly when run as administrator.
- Finds duplicates by content hash and can replace them with hardlinks or shrink files with NTFS compression.
- Portable ZIP plus winget, Chocolatey, Scoop and Microsoft Store installs for x64, x86 and ARM64.
Cons
- Windows only; the project points Mac and Linux users to GrandPerspective and QDirStat.
- Fast MFT scanning requires admin rights and a local NTFS drive; network shares and phones scan more slowly.
- No automatic junk detection or scheduled cleaning; every deletion is chosen by hand.
